Taking your iPad on an airplane? There’s a fee for that.

Flying seemingly gets less fun by the day – and that’s before you get on the plane. Long security lines, stinky shoe removals, naked x-rays, TSA agents openly bickering with each other what the rules actually are – and yet these are things that we’ve somehow all gotten used to. And while flight prices have dropped over the years on paper, the reality is that it’s been wiped out by fees for booking your flight over the phone, free in-flight meals replaced with five dollar snack boxes, and that (soon, we hope, bankrupt) airline overseas who has announced its intention to charge customers to use the restroom while in the air. But how far is too far when it comes to having to show up to the airport with a metaphorical ziploc bag full of spare change to cover all the nickel and diming the airlines intend to throw at you? Apparently, an airline in Florida called “Spirit” intends to find out, as it has announced plans to charge up to $45 for your carry-on bag.

Well, at least if it’s going to go into the overhead bin. But last we checked, the space under the seat in front of you keeps shrinking by the day, not even necessarily being big enough to stash a small bag, and with some seats on the plane having no space under the seat at all. So that means that if you want to travel on said airline with anything you can’t fit in your pocket (or glue to your body, apparently), you may have to pony up just for the privilege. That means that flyers who need to travel with a laptop – or even an iPad – may have to plunk down the cost of about fifteen App Store games or else leave their device at home.

The good news? Apparently, other airlines aren’t quite as brazen at Spirit and have announced that they have no intention to follow suit; perhaps they’ll just start charging for the oxygen we breathe while on the plane. Now that’s the spirit.
