Review: Fremont Die NFL Leather Steering Wheel Cover
December 6, 2012 by Bill Palmer
Bumper stickers and license plate wraparounds may be the most popular ways for fans to express support for their favorite teams, but neither can be seen by the driver while in the car. Contrast that with the NFL Leather Steering Wheel Cover from Fremont Die, which allows you to place your team’s logo right in front of your eyes while driving.
Upon opening the box you’re immediately greeted with the unmistakable smell of genuine leather. The cover is a single unit, held together by three visible seams, and includes your team’s name and logo paired up in three equally spaced places around the cover. Attaching it to the steering wheel is a matter of twisting a portion of the cover sideways and pressing it onto the steering wheel, and doing the same around its entire circumference until it’s fully in place. Being careful to make sure one of the logos was aligned with the top of the steering wheel, the entire process took me under a minute.
Taking it for a test drive, I found that the cover was smoother to the touch than the rigid surface of the steering wheel itself, but in no way slippery. In fact the cover made for a more comfortable grip. The black leather will match stylistically with any car whose interior is primarily black, but particularly so with cars which use a leather motif in their own right. The team logos wrap around from the sides of the steering wheel to the front, making the logos visible to you while you’re driving, anyone in the passenger seat, and anyone who walks past your car and peers into the window, ensuring that both you and others are reminded of which team you’re rooting for.
In my tests, there’s really nothing not to like here. I initially wondered whether the three visible seams might interfere with the ease of slip-steering, but that turned out be a non issue. The $39 price sounds about right for a leather product, which makes the Fremont Die NFL Leather Steering Wheel Cover easily recommendable for those who are looking to both cover their wheel and show off their fanhood. For those who object to real leather, Fremont Die also offers a poly-suede version, which I didn’t test.
