Review: id America Spark In-Ear Headphones

November 26, 2012   by

Metal earbuds are nothing new. But metal earbuds that are shaped like miniature spark plugs make for an interesting specimen. That’s the idea behind the appropriately named Spark in-ear headphones from id America, available for $59 in a choice of color configurations ranging from red white and blue, to black and gold. They look even more cool up close and in person than they do in pictures. Of course the first question that comes to mind with such novel concepts is whether they’re competent audio product or just a gimmick.

My tests with the Spark revealed a solid audio experience. These earbuds sound solid on the high and low end, nothing flashy, but plenty suitable for all genres. They’re not the best sounding product in this price range, but they come respectably close such that if you like the unique design then you’re getting your money’s worth.

The buds themselves are small enough that despite being made of hard metal they’re plenty comfortable. I’d like the Spark a little more if it came with three buttons built in so as to include volume control, as opposed to the single button provided. But it does come with a nice cylindrical carrying case, which is not a given inclusion in this price range.
