iPhone 5 sees five release date scenarios from rosy summer to 2012 fail
June 9, 2011 by Beatweek
As the cadre of would-be iPhone 5 buyers turned to Steve Jobs for answers on its release date, he simply shrugged and talked about how great its software features are going to be once it shows up. His hype-fest merely served to ratchet up expectations and thus excitement for the next generation iPhone 5 while failing to give any real hint as to when it’s coming. As such, the question we get asked most often, “When is the iPhone 5 release date?”, is being asked even more frequently than when the week began. The answer: we don’t know. And neither does anyone else outside of Apple’s innermost posse. But here are five scenarios for its release, along with the realistic odds of each and the corresponding impact.
Very soon. The theory: Apple didn’t unveil the iPhone 5 this week because it wanted iOS 5 and the iCloud to get all the attention. Apple will hold a press conference next week and announce the iPhone 5 on its own. The reality: Not bloody likely. Why would Apple do something so strange?
August. The theory: iOS 5 needs beta testing and developer lead time, and Apple doesn’t want to roll out the iPhone 5 until iOS 5 is ready. Announcing the iPhone 5 this week would have hurt iPhone 4 and 3GS sales in the mean time, so it decided to hold off. The reality: Sounds reasonable…
September. The theory: see the above scenario, except Apple decides to use its traditional early September iPress Conference to launch the iPhone 5. The reality: Feels like the most likely scenario.
Just before the holidays. The theory: Something about the iPhone 5 and/or iOS 5 is running late, and we mean late. But Apple is determined to get it to market before the holidays, so it’ll surface sometime not too long before November’s Black Friday shopping season launch. The reality: You’re getting colder. If Apple really were going to need to leave the iPhone 5 hanging for that long, it likely would have done some sort of interstitial model in the mean time. But such a model would have been unleashed at WWDC, and it wasn’t.
Doomsday 2012. The theory: Apple decides to leave the iPhone 4 as the current model for more than a year and a half, unleashing the iPhone 5 in February of 2012 or so. The reality: aside from fouling up the iPad 3 launch, waiting this long for the iPhone 5 would be too poor of an idea for Apple to even be considering, particularly in light of the fact that it just unveiled iOS 5 which will apparently be ready for public release within months. Do you really see a scenario in which Apple either A) releases iOS 5 this year for the iPhone 4 but with no iPhone 5 in tow, or B) has unveiled iOS 5 now but with no intention to release it until the iPhone 5 is ready next year? Either scenario evokes the phrase “epic fail.” These are both nonsensical, which is why we expect to see the iPhone 5 this year. And because Apple almost never releases major new hardware any later in the year than early September, we’re betting on that scenario above. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.

LikeThough I am waiting on pins and needles as most Mac Product users are I hesitate to think that mac is moving too slow. I don't want a world where the phone I bought last week as the new thing is obsolete in 3 months. Mac has had a wonderful practice of not releasing technology until it has been tested to the point of failure to find, and fix problems before they hit the market. I think has been and will continue to be good business practices. Just as our computers have been so aggravating over the years with PC based systems they seem to release products every other month to make us buy yet another PC. Apple has always seemed to me at least waited until they had a major innovation before they would release another System. I Love the fact that my Macbok Pro is still considered a viable, and powerful computer well over a year after I bought it and still worth quite a bit of money. try that with any other platform PC. Don't give Apple a hard time because they want to be sure before they release a new product that it has to be as flawless as possible before they let it out of the cage. Not to mention how would you release iPhone 5 Before the release of the OS5 system it is supposed to run on? Keep up the good work Apple. I love it.

LikeBasically most of the population in the UK, Australia and many countries in Europe all use "autumn" rather than the North American version of "fall"...... just sayin :P

LikeYour unlimited data plan will stay (but you have to stay with a smartphone, no changing to an old one or else you lose it). And you have to buy the phone in the store/over the phone as opposed via web because it will not give you that option. :/ Unlimited Smartphone Data Plan. I called At&t about it because I have a Blackberry Torch and wanted to see if I could still keep the unlimited data plan if I got an iPhone. They said yes, they just need to have a manager override the new policy for data plans. You can only have a smartphone with that plan. Hope this helps! :)

LikeI too have an old iPhone 3G. I asked about when I was looking at the 4 and was told that since I have an original AT&T plan, my new phone will carry the same data plan I have always had. My son, who bought the 4 outright (I didn't btw, holding out for the 5) had to go with the new plan, even though he owned a 3GS, because he bought a new number.

Likewhatever the date, it better be soon, as Android 4.0 and like platforms get realized, from a business point of view Apple can't afford to losing the lead, iPhone is extremely profitable for Apple and would affect sales of music and apps on iTunes, ultimately losing money and stock value.
I have used Apple computers since 1984, Macintosh was a great success early on, mid 1990's sales dropped and Apple was in trouble, same thing could happen with the iPhone and iPad (remember the Newton?)

LikeYour speaking the truth, but apples confidence in the Iphone 4 is also a contribution to why the I-phone 5 hasn't been released yet. The only draw back that it has is that it does not run on the 4g network. (Which means nothing) I have compared the speed to all other smart phones out there running on "4G", and I really wasn't surprised to see that the I-phone 4 loaded up pages 3-4 seconds quicker. It is interesting that Apple didn't come out with a 4GS to accommodate for not being 4G compatible, but I'll assume they know that at this point they are superior to the competition.

Likei have a 3g iPhone, the phone its till works fine, i use the texting, i use the camera - there was no reason to update - i do not need a bunch of stupid apps to make me feel occupied while i should be socializing with whom i am surrounded by like so many people do, to me it does not make them look Important just socially retarded, and certainly not like the " tech geek " they are trying to portray them selves at - yes i do have apps, all of them free, but apps on a little phone really do not do anything to improve the quality of life for any one - i am not sure people realize that

Likeyou should use the iphone 4 then if you think that your 3g is still good. I have the 3GS and it sucks compared to the iphone 4. It's slower, not as responsive and the iphone 4 takes wayy better pictures than the previous iphones

LikeIt's so obvious, Apple is waiting for AT&T to get their 4G LTE network up and running because they don't want to use the soon to be obsolete 4G that they have now. The 4G AT&T has now is basically 3.5G, notice how whenever they say 4G theres always an **asterisk next to it LOL

LikeI say September too. I see the Apple webpage saying "New iPhone 5 ships with iOS 5" the same way they did the new MacBook Air with Lion.

Likewhat good is a super fast phone that doesn't work anywhere. 3G, 4G, 4G LTE. not really sure what the difference is but from what i've read it sounds like each one needs a different tower and 4G towers are practically no where. my current phone makes calls and has texting, thats it. all i want is an iPhone that works the same as my current phone with the added bonus on apps and iTunes and all that. can't we just chose for ourselves. do i really need 4G that won't give me service anywhere in order to have the phone because thats pointless. i want to option to chose the 3G plan and enjoy my phone where ever i go with its long battery life and put up with the slower speed. if i've got this all wrong let me know but it all seems like a hunk of crap to me to try and sucker people in to the next big thing.

LikeCurrently, iPhones are running on 3G network, but there is also an option to disable 3G and use the Edge network instead... Assuming iPhone 5 does run on a 4G network (and I'm not so sure it will) it will most likely have an option to run on 3G as well. So I wouldn't worry about that. Some tech blogs are speculating that Apple might create its own cell network (http://www.beatweek.com/news/8885-cash-iphone-5-release-date-apple-dollars-leans-to-branded-network/) but who knows if that'll happen... They've certainly got the $$$ for it, though.

LikeEnglish is second language for me, so I guess I might find strange words (like the French "autumn") as being natural :P "Fall" is more like "fail" though... at least for some people ;) and at least for some who are waiting for that next iPhone.

LikeIf I'm not mistaken, every year Apple released the new version of software (aka iOS) just a little before each new iPhone hardware release. Granted this year they changed the release schedule, but on their website it says "iOS 5. Coming this fall". So it's a good bet to assume that the iPhone 5 (or 4S.. whatever) will be released very soon after that. The question is now what "fall" means... and if it came to this word, why don't they use "autumn", as it sounds more optimistic, maybe even more fashionable.

LikeSeptember is the most likely scenario. That will give them time to finalize ios 5 and give the developers lead time to develop ios 5 apps. Plus, they get it on the market before the holidays which is critical.
