“Verizon iPhone release date” more popular than “Verizon Droid”

July 5, 2010

“Verizon iPhone” is the most frequent search term involving the word Verizon, according to Google News. Searches for the non-existent product outnumber searches for “Verizon” on its own, as well as searches for “Verizon wireless.” So what about Verizon’s hyped iPhone competitor, the Droid? It turns out “Verizon Droid” is eighth on the list, with the branding so muddled that slightly more people are searching for news on “Verizon Android” (in reference to the device’s operating system instead of its brand name) than “Verizon Droid.” How about the newly touted “Verizon Incredible”? Nope, that’s down in the fifth spot – one spot below “Verizon iPhone release date.” That’s right, there are more people searching for the very specific phrase “Verizon iPhone release date” than there are searching for information on any of Verizon’s existing phones. While this is shattering news for Verizon – which has clearly backed the wrong horse in that the entire Android platform is still being spanked by the iPhone platform in marketshare by a tune of more than three to one – it’s not necessarily great news for Apple either, as it demonstrates just how many Verizon customers want an iPhone but are still waiting patiently until the iPhone finally comes to Verizon before they buy one, as opposed to switching over to AT&T as Apple currently wishes they would do.

I am currently a customer of AT&T because I love the iPhone and Verizon for business phone, but can't wait for the move of the iPhone to Verizon. I tried to update my current iPhone 3G and was told I could but at $400 until my contract expired in Feb 2011. Even though it was claimed that folks with older phones could upgrade early. But that's a lie unless you want to pay the full frieight. If the iPhone comes to Verizon, AT&T guess where my money is going!!!

"I tried to update my current iPhone 3G and was told I could but at $400 until my contract expired in Feb 2011."

That's unlikely to be accurate. You may want to check with a different store than the one who gave you that information.

That is true. I am a verizon customer...I am one of these statistics... Why? My wife bought me an iTouch and fell in love with it...the design, the user frindly interface, it is a Great product... But i am concerned about att coverage to get an ipjone and waiting impatiently to get both coverage and product... I really tried droid, i tried palm, i tried blackbury and payed the $35 restock because none of them gave the itouch feeling.... So why cant we be like europe where apple licensed the product to different phone companies... Seems like Steve Job is more of a genius of design than a real business man... Why else he will shutt out billions of dollars in revenue with pitential verizon customers.....

I'm as much of an Apple supporter as anyone. I'm not just a "popular fan" or something; I've been loyal to the company even when nobody else was back in the early 90s. I've been waiting a LONG time for Verizon to pick up the iPhone; I already use the ipod Touch and would like nothing better than to have the phone capability as well.

But Verizon needs to know this. If they don't offer a lower price than AT&T's price for the monthly service, then I'm *still* not going to buy one even after they're on my carrier. It's ridiculous to have to pay $100/month just for phone service with texts and internet.

Prepare to be disappointed. Why would Verizon charge less than AT&T. Premium never comes at Regular Unleaded prices. And VZW is likely to be 12-18 mos ahead of T on their 4G rollout. So you can enjoy your slightly lower bill... and your slow edge network. Now if you somehow think that is unfair, remember that VZW has invested 60 BILLION into their network AND most analysts agree that VZW is likely to get a bigger bang for each $ spent simply because they have a better corp. culture. ...so when the iPhone comes to VZW do yourself a favor and live a little... stop buying vanilla just once.

Verizon needs to do more to get the iphone on their network, it is the responsable thing to do.

I will not switch to AT&T just because of the iphone. I like the phone a lot but switching to AT&T is definitely a tep down.
  • This is a slightly deceptive look at statistics... there has been a lot of news recently regarding a Verizon iPhone - either leaked or made up. If you are looking at a short period of time, then yes, during a burst of news there is going to be a lot of search for something. The question would be when the news settles down, if that would still be the case.

Nice try, but "Verizon iPhone" was also the most popular Verizon-related search term white iphone 4. This is no anomaly or passing fad. It's yet more hard evidence that the Verizon customer base by and large wants an iPhone and not a Droid.

Or...iPhone customers want a better service than ATT.
