Official: Britney Spears surpasses five million Twitter follower mark
May 28, 2010 by Beatweek
Britney Spears has just become the first Twitter user to amass five million followers, reaching the mark a few moments ago. The milestone comes soon after she became the site’s most-followed user earlier this month. While not one of the social networking service’s more active users, and a good portion of her tweets coming from her manager at that (something they have been up front about), Spears has amassed her following through her mainstream popularity. As such, the milestone marks a further shift in the Twitter userbase, which originally favored active-posting geeks like Robert Scoble, then later favored active-posting celebs like Ashton Kutcher, and now apparently favors celebs whether they’re all-day-long contributors or not. While Britney is the first and so far only Twitter user to reach the five million mark, she does have some company in the four million follower club, including Kutcher (who will likely reach the five million mark himself in June) and Lady GaGa, who is at the 4.2 million mark. Oprah Winfrey, a relative newcomer to Twitter, has amassed 3.6 million followers.
