Lee DeWyze wins Idol – will another female contestant ever win?

May 26, 2010   by

Lee DeWyze won American Idol tonight, making him the third consecutive male contestant to do so, despite Crystal Bowersox having been considered the odds-on favorite for the entire season. Bowersox had been the only female finalist out of the show’s past six, with Kris Allen defeating Adam Lambert last year and David defeating David Archuleta the year before. This leads to the question, with Idol voters now consistently favoring male contestants, of whether another girl ever win on American Idol. Lee DeWyze’s victory was only a minor surprise, as he had been coming on strong, and it was nowhere near as big of a shock as last year’s results. But the results make you wonder if Jordan Sparks just might go down in history as the final woman to ever win on Idol, if the streak of male-dominated finals continues.

Girls dominated the early years of Idol because the most talented guys mostly stayed away, seeing Idol as a girly thing to do. There was some media backlash after Jordin Sparks beat that beatboxer guy and then it all began to change. Top male talent came into the show, and at the same time, older more mature viewers stopped watching, leaving most of the voting to teenie boppers who go for the young rocker guys. Bottom line, American Idol is now American GuyDoll, but early i-Tunes results suggest Crystal might still become the real star in the end. And that's what really counts! Future female candidates might do better on the new X-Factor show next year.
