iPad, iPhone see updated AIM instant messaging app
May 16, 2010 by Beatweek
The iPhone and iPad versions of AIM have been updated to a new version in the App Store, and while there are any number of third party instant messaging apps which run on the same AIM platform and are widely considered to have surpassed AIM itself, AIM is still the “official” app in as much as it comes directly from AOL itself, who created the AIM instant messaging platform before sloughing off into irrelevance. But while AOL is no longer part of most internet users’ vocabularies, AIM remains the most popular instant messaging platform in the United States by far. Thus it’s news, if not huge news, that the AIM apps have received minor updates which include crash fixes and foursquare integration on the iPhone side as well as fixes for logout and scrolling issues on the iPad side.
AIM for iPad and AIM for iPhone are both ad-supported, which detracts from their desirability, but they’re also both free, which is likely a big part of what’s kept them popular. There’s also a $2.99, ad-free version of AIM for iPhone available.
