“Showboat Magnus” is the only Siobhan insult Simon didn’t think of

May 1, 2010   by

It was never clear whether Simon Cowell truly didn’t care for Siobhan Magnus or simply thought he could spur her on to try harder by tweaking her, but the contestants’ recently concluded run on American Idol has reportedly left the judge feeling “sad” at her departure. We can’t help but wonder whether it’s because he thought she had potential or because he was hoping he’d have a few more weeks to hurl insults at her after each of her performances. Simon has always hard on Siobhan, much to the dismay of her fans, but no harsher than on her final performance of the show; while the other three judges seemed to think her rousing performance of a Shania Twain song put her back into the competition for the title, Simon effectively ended Siobhan’s Idol run by dropping a devastating insult about the song having sounded like she was “giving birth” after which voters probably couldn’t bring themselves to pick up the phone for fear of the creepy comment finding its way back into their minds.

One has to wonder what other insults Simon might have come up with if only he’d had a few more shots at the overly emotive contestant, and we’re particularly surprised that he wasn’t able to come up with the obvious “Showboat Magnus” in reference to her often showy performances (note how we didn’t use that name while she was still on the show, for fear that Simon might somehow find it and use it). Making fun of someone for their name isn’t exactly fair play, but since when would that matter to Simon? Besides, what are they going to do to him, fire him from a show that he’s departing from in a month anyway? On that note, one really has to wonder how the judge, who’s never much cared about the political correctness of anything he’s said on the show over the years, might start talking as he creeps closer to the end of his Idol run. On the other hand, his favorite whipping post of the season has already departed. At least Siobhan now knows that she’ll never have to be insulted by Simon again – unless he finds a way to work in yet one more insult when she makes her obligatory appearance during the season’s – and his – final episode. Come to think of it, we might end up being sorry we made the “Showboat” reference in print.

I agree with the vast majority of the comments on this thread regarding Siobhan Magnus. To her credit, she put up with plenty of nonsensical remarks from someone who has made a fortune making fun of others and offering very little in the way of constructive criticism. Ironically, this is exactly what Siobhan has stood against during her young life. Simon Cowell is a buffoon! His lack of education is clearly evident in his speech, pedestrian vocabulary, and lack of proper enunciation. He comes across as a person who is bitter toward those who are clearly higher on the IQ scale than he. He will not be missed, assuming of course that the show even survives one more dreadful season! Siobhan is on to bigger and better things. I do thank American Idol for discovering her and giving her the opportunity to delight us with her charm, warm personality, authenticity, and talent. Unfortunately for them, Siobhan will not continue to enthrall us with her singing, and the show will continue to spiral downward, as it should. Good riddance to Cowell and hopefully the confused Kara as well. A heartfelt thank you and congratulations to a new-born star: Siobhan Magnus!

Siobhan is many things, but bland, boring, and easy to put in a box aren't among them. And I think that Simon just taunted her for his own amusement. I re-watched the first Stavros Flatley performance from Britain's Got Talent (last spring). Simon actually laughs and enjoys himself. On AI, he's bored and sour. But Siobhan kept her head held high and never stooped to his level. Good for her! I do hope she has a music career that brings her joy - she deserves it.

Excellent comment by jacccccy. One of the least-discussed things about Siobhan is how by some real hard work she was putting out some incredibly good studio recordings. Ones that recognized her live performance vocal weaknesses on certain weeks and showed she ultimately DID have the vocal skills to make some spectacularly good recordings. Like jaccccy, I was amazed with "When You Believe" on itunes. Magnus delivered - everthing! It is better than the Mariah/Whitney version, IMO."Across the Universe" recording came out gorgeous as well. You have to believe that some people in the industry have noticed those two itunes and that many did a "Holy Smokes!" or similar such expression on "When You Believe". People and radio go with recording studio work - and at this stage, despite looks and stage presence and other things indicating she will do very well in live performance - right now Siobhan is doing album-quality studio cuts that fully realize her vocal talents. It doesn't help now that besides losing her as a singer and a reason to watch Idol - that her exit interviews are only showing more of her A-class character and temperment, and showing the slow talker is actually a most thoughtful, perceptive young woman. Just adds to regret at he being gone from the national stage a bit - while making me anticipate her coming significant career all the more. The hostility of some judges and the whole negative vibe from Idol this year is unfathomable.

The judging on the show this year has bothered me more then the bad contestants. Simon & Kara definitely had it out for Siobhan for sure, very unfair. I've always liked Simon in the past and most of the time agreed with him, but not this year at all.

Yes, right on with your comments. I will never watch AI again because of the cruel callous way she was treated by Kara and Simon and then even Randy one time. It was as if they had some agenda and they needed to make it happen...Siobhan fail. I could feel the negative vibe through the television. But she is too talented to fail. I believe she will be a diva someday. Her personality, her sense of style, her stage presence and her voice. I don't know about screaming. I don't hear it. It is hitting the notes. Oh well, I am kind of glad she is gone as I dont think I could stand any more cruel comments from Simon and Kara...not constructive fair criticism but cruel callous comments.

Do you guys not run a spell and grammar check over your articles before you print them? I was very surprised Siobhan went. I cannot believe Aaron is still there. It is a sad indictment of the American voting demographic I feel. This season has been very disapointing, apart from Crystal (and Lilly Scott) there is no more talent on show than what you could find at a school talent competition!! Siobhan will be missed mainly for her quirkiness, not her voice...

Simon is a stupid asshole brit, and needs to be booted out of the US for good.

Siobhan is my North, my South, my East and West,My working week and my Sunday rest,My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song:I thought her song would last forever: I was wrong....with thanks to W.H. AudenHere's to a wonderful post-Idol career!

Sorry A274 but I can't agree with your statement that Simon was tough on Siobhon because he wants her to be better. If that were the case, it would mean that Simon does not want Crystal to be better because he almost never criticizes her. The truth is that Simon wanted Siobhan off the show as soon as possible so that his favorite, Crystal, would be sure to make it to the top 2.

He did the same thing to Alexis Grace, in almost the same words after a performance:"That wasn't as good as YOU thought it was". This was to elicit a negative reaction fromthe Performer in order to sour the voters on her. It worked with Alexis.Siobhan just stared at him, as if she was being forced to watch an unpleasant bug, which,of course, he is.

I am sad that I temporarily can't hear Siobhan's beautiful voice. Her studio recordings were amazing and she will be a great recording artist. Nevertheless I was happy to see her go so that she would have to endure the insults of that sadistic Simon Cowell. You could see that Cowell was gradually able to worm his way into her head to make her doubt herself in performance. I downloaded her studio recording of "When You Believe" and I like it better than Mariah and Whitney's performance. The melismatic runs she does are just beautiful. But after so much abuse from the sadistic Simon her performances just suffered. I'm happy she's out for her sake.

Simon be tough on Sibhon because he wants her to be better.

If your theory is true, then there are thousands of better and RIGHT ways to do that. There's something called constructive criticism.

My thoughts exactly the same. At the beginning of the season, Ryan tried to "confront" Simon about making constructive criticism but apparently Simon "cut" that out by telling Ryan to back off and since then Ryan did not help much the contestant after Simons's insulting comment. However, if the contestant could not stand to Simon how could they stand to far worst criticism when they are on the real field - in their professional career. Like they say if you cannot stand a little blood nose then come and play with the big boy. Overall, I think Siobhan handle her self respectfully and stood her ground without backing down as compared to other contestants.
