Siobhan Magnus early exit shows it’s really South and Midwest Idol

April 30, 2010   by

She wasn’t going to win anyway. But the early exit of Siobhan Magnus, which came three episodes before it probably should have, only serves to drive home a point that we finally learned last season after being teased about it for most of the past decade when it comes to American Idol: “America” isn’t voting. Just ask yourself why every single winner the show has ever produced has come from the nation’s south or midwest or southwest; not a single winner has ever emerged from a place like California or New York or New England.

It’s not the show’s fault, as they hold tryouts all over the nation prior to each season. And it’s not the fault of potential contestants from those regions, as the rise of SoCal-based contestants like Adam Lambert and Katharine McPhee in past seasons has demonstrated that talented individuals from places like Los Angeles have been willing to give it a go on the show. But whether it’s a matter of hometown pride in regions of the country where most people living in a given State were also born there, or whether it be the comparative lack of television watching that takes place in bustling big cities, the lack of votes being cast in places like LA and New York not only holds back contestants who are from those cities, it inhibits the rise of contestants who play well in those cities. You want to know why Adam Lambert lost last year? Because small towners considered him to be so weird that he scared the crap out of them. And while Siobhan Magnus may be no Adam Lambert (although surely her fans will disagree), the fact that the Boston native was by far the most oddly eccentric of the top contestants almost surely caused American Idol’s voters, most of whom are in conservative small towns, to send her packing sooner than her potential as a pop star might have suggested.

Looking at the top five we can see that this season’s winner of American Idol will come from Illinois, Ohio, small town Pennsylvania, Florida or Texas. Sound familiar? It’s not the fault of the people in America’s south and midwest, who do most of the voting; they’re just voting their honest preferences. But in hindsight, is it really any surprise that Siobhan Magnus, whose musical stylings were the least likely to play well in America’s small towns of any of the top contestants, was sent packing when she was?

NOTE TO ALL COMMENTERS: stop trying to use the comments section of this article to advertise a $%@#ing book - it'll get you automatically banned. We don't care what book you're referring to, either, whether it's about Idol or the three little pigs.Sincerely,Beatweek Magazine

Adam Lambert did not lose last year because small towners thought he was too weird, he lost because one state brought in 38 million AT&T tainted votes. Reporters should do some homework. Adam was more popular with the most likely American Idol voters in 49 states. Anyone can research the available marketing data and determine that fact. They can also determine that the vote was skewed and did not represent the majority of voters, but only the majority of votes that were able to get through. If you do not want to do your own research read Kerry Kolsch's book. it is all there.

The heck with Siob getting voted off early, the REAL Idol SHOCKER is Aaron. I mean, c'mon, are you telling me people are actually power-voting for this guy for 2 hours? He is TRULY AWFUL and wouldn't have won the talent show at my high school yet he avoided B3 this last week. I have many friends who watch Idol and every single one thinks Aaron is terrible, so WHO is voting for him?

Siob's problem is that she isn't sure who she is as a singer. Her song choices were atrocious and the "scream" was often out of tune and didn't fit the song. When Adam did his rock wail it always made sense - with Siob it seemed as if she was just showing off. That being said, I think she could make a good record with the right management - just DON'T let her pick the songs she sings cause her head is in the 60's and she doesn't get "current" at all.

hey guys, do you want to know why adam lambert lost AI8, please buy the book ADAM LAMBERT SECOND TO NONE and e-line book. the author is still standing high and untouchable, her facts are solid.

My comments - MM - about voting based not on "family values..." etc. were in reply to "Marc". I didn't enter them correctly apparently... for whatever it's worth.

You words about Magnus were lovely, and I appreciate them - HOWEVER, you only voted for her based on her music abilities, singing talent, and potential as a possible recording artist, right? Because if you voted for her based on, to quote you "...because of her personality, her family values..." then you are part of the voting problem with Idol, not the solution. That sounds harsh, I know, but I truly believe it's true - and you sound like a very intelligent and REASONABLE person, so I'm taking my time to reply to you in this regards. I applaud diversity and staying true to oneself, like Adam Lambert, but Adam Lambert is also criminally fantastically talented, and was very deserving of making it to the finale. I'm not an uber Lambert fan (just a musical taste thing, nothing negative) but was deserving of his votes on Season 8 based on his incredible talent, not the pioneering position he found himself in and his seemingly lovely nature etc. I don't mean to make a mountain out of a molehill of kind comments, and I get that we're only talking about the Idol bubble here, but I sincerely believe that voting for AI should be based soley on ability and potential for a recording career, not family values etc. - but that's just me.

Enjoyed this article...going to have my tweens read it as I'm constantly trying to educate them as to why I'm so uninterested in American Idol now - this article makes a great start, in terms of the "demographics" issues! THIS IS WHY there should be a voting system that is something like what I'm told they do on Dancing With The Stars - where each number (whether it be phone, email, text account etc) can only send in like 10 votes or something like that. Some system like that would help a bit with this issue...but Idol surely does not seem interested. Well, it's probably a bit of a dead issue anyway with Idol itself dying out. I'm not one of those uber Adam Lambert fans ('though I think he's amazingly talented and I'm very happy for his success) but I have to concede that I've jumped on that "Adam Lambert broke American Idol" bandwagon (but in the very best of ways). Idol has a great legacy with Clarkson, Underwood, Hudson, Lambert and even about a bunch of others that they should be very proud in having helped discover... it's time to let it go now IMHO.

Never in the shows history was I so impressed with a singer as I was with Siobhan Magnus. Lakisha Jones comes close. As soon as I heard Siobhan sing Wicked Game I was hooked. I can always tell if a singer performer really connects to me. It is when I smile and get excited watching a singer take me to a new place. I felt that with Miss Magnus in every one of her performances. The others took me to an old tired place. I did some research to learn more about her background in some wonderful online videos. She seems like such a lovely person. I believe you are correct in assessing the country wide voting. Folks in the NE, upper Midwest and the West coast generally don't watch as much television. Lilly Scott alluded to this in her exit interview as to why she may have not received as many votes. Anyway, in six months when it is all said and done Siobhan will have opportunities outside the Idol machine and I look forward to hearing her charming voice again. And I am not watching the show anymore this season. The days are getting longer in the NW and so many other things to do.

How can you say she was not going to win... are you suddenly Nostradamos??? She had the right potential but had Simon and Kara on her back constantly... Kara following suit to Simon, wondering how much original thought there is in her body! Anyway... I am saddened to... it was the only reason I was watching this season after a start studded Adam brought Idol talent to new heights. Siohban is of the same calibre but perhaps needs a little sharpening of the claws... go get em Siohban... the world is yours for the taking!!!

I don't think anyone who's been watching the show dispassionately over the past month would have thought she was going to win. She started off strong, but then seemed to lose her way (either because her vision for who she wants to be isn't as strongly formed yet as some had thought, or simply because the judges managed to mess with her head), which erased any chance of her winning the show. She then had a strong rebound this week which seemingly should have cemented her in the top three, but didn't, for the reasons above.

I thought Siobhan was uneven on Idol, so I was curious to see how she would do in other venues, since she seems to have so much potential. Having Friday off, I tuned into The Ellen Show. What I saw was a star.An intelligent, charismatic person radiating warmth in chat with Ellen. She looked beautiful. Then her singing performance of "House of the Rising Sun" was absolutely phenomenal. It brought Ellen's crowd of mostly middle-aged women to their feet. Some tearing up from the power and emotion Siobhan put into the song. That is what Idol tossed away. Watching Ellen's show removed any doubt I had that Siobhan Magnus does not belong on the lips of the career-makers in music, theater, movies as a phenomenal talent with "all the extras". This girl is going places. And it seems as authentic and nice as she is...a future that couldn't happen to a better and more deserving young lady.

Adam fans, stop being defensive about the comparisons. Time will tell who will end up the bigger star. Adam has had a huge amount of publicity that has translated poorly to record sales.AI is a joke because the average voter who does not want to spend two hours voting has no real voice. The strongest voices are people who have two hours of time to text in votes-- geez, I wonder who this might be. Anyway, this all assumes that the voting is not rigged-- which we will never really know.

WHAT??? Translated poorly in record sales? YOU ARE KIDDING??? His WHATAYA WANT FROM ME just went PLATINUM in the US ... his FYE album has reached NUMEROUS countries of the WORLD & gone GOLD & PLATINUM in MANY!! He's at the TOP of the charts in more countries than I can remember the names of. PLEASE!! Do some research before you make such a LUDICROUS statement!

Marc, what a wonderful way to describe Siobhan, I was drawn to this idol from the start. I loved her shy and beautiful smile. I gathered together all my senior friends to vote for her each week, especially when the judges were so mean. I hope she will continue her career and I hope we hear from her in the near future.

It was so sad to see someone so talented as Siobhan to go home so early. This grandmother voted for her as much as I could. Saw her on Ellen today and she was awesome. Thinking about not watching idol anymore.

This season Simon and Kara have been idiotic. Siobhan has been the only contestant that works, the audience, the lighting effects, the cameras and the stage. She is a performer. I hear others say that her performances sound flat. Well if I am hearing things correctly, the Idol sound management sounds flat even for high end professional performers. I wonder if they ever check their broadcast to see if the sound management is spot on. It sounds to me like they have so many filters and clamps that everything sounds flat - even instruments. Next week, Sinatra? Who is planning this show? The judges want performances that sound young, upbeat and relevant. Who is smoking the hoosch? Kara complained that Siobhan didn't define herself. What? Her Genre, Style, Type of Artist. What does she mean? How can you do that with ridiculous themes? Post Siobhan, the show is forgettable, irrelevant and now extremely painful to watch. I'll pass - I got better things to do.

There are a lot of 10 and 12 year olds voting in American Idol and they have no clue what talent is.

Being from Texas, I can see your point. However, I became of fan of this very talented, beautiful, and authentic artist from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, because of her personality, her family values, her commitment to staying true to herself in pursuing her vision, and her ability to move you with her musicality. No one else on the show this year, or past, can do that for me. She's edgy and doing things that others can't or won't. Siobhan's courage, humility, selflessness, and commitment to excellence, even in the pursuit of adversity, has made me a fan for life. We got cheated with her early departure, but she will continue to flourish and become a BIG star. I look forward to her many CDs and artistic endeavors. It's amazing how someone so young, and unknown to me until her appearance on American Idol, has affected me in a very positive and uplifting manner, and for that, I thank her and am grateful for the ride to the top that has just begun.

Despite the obvious musical differences between the two, Kris and Danny played well to the exact same audience; they were splitting that vote between them. Once Danny was gone, those votes shifted to Kris, who then won. The lesson last season was that if even Adam, who was perhaps the most talented contestant in the history of the show, couldn't get small town conservatives to look past their "we wish it were still the 1950's" unease when voting, then no future flamboyant/eccentric contestant ever will either. It not only helps explain Siobhan's early exit, it also helps explain why seemingly fewer eccentric performers even tried out for the show this year; after Adam proved that the eccentric types can't win under any circumstances, why bother even trying?

You are absolutely wrong. The problem with you theory is that at the time of the final and for that matter, the entire competition Adam was favored by more than 50% of American Idol’s most likely voters. When Danny left Adam was favored by Danny’s fans for the most part because it is a singing contest. In case you don’t remember this was suppose to be a Danny/ Adam final and Danny’s fans were upset with Kris for how Kris acted in the duet and for displacing Danny in the final. I have researched all types of social media and marketing data that proves this point. Danny’s home state was just not fond of Kris and in fact Adam was more popular than Danny in many Wisconsin cities. The only state in which Kris was more popular than Adam was Arkansas. It was the millions of Arkansas tainted AT&T votes that caused Kris his unfair win. The only bump in popularity Kris got was when he won and he still he could not Google Trend above Adam. It has been down hill for Kris ever since as he continues to lose fans while Adam gains them. Adam Lambert Second to None has the research.

If this is really "South and Midwest Idol" and Adam Lambert scared the crap out of them... then he should be voted off much much earlier. Why was he in the finale?? Siobhan was robbed!

Voting Shioban off was the dumbest thing the viewers have done. This goes back to when Chris Daughtry was voted off and Jennifer Hudson. I think she will be a big star without Idol. She has the best voice of all the contestants. As of right now, I don't have a clue who will win, but I'm not a happy viewer with who's left except maybe for Crystal.

I really liked Siobhan at first, voted for her many times. But I really don't think she was as good as people made her out to be. A lot of her performances were just disappointing. The only thing she brought to the table that other didn't have was the scream. And even then it was a little hard to watch (it was just flat and off key). Personally I think the girl needs a few vocal lessons.

So true. She is not that good. It is timely that she is out as well.

I only started watching this because of Siobhan I know her Now that she is gone I will not watch again I am from the northeast and dont watch much TV

I have to say that I am a huge Siobhan fan and it would be so nice to see the ratings drop so significantly that small towns become "big" towns in the AC Neilson demographic. I will never watch the show and I no longer give a shit.As soon as Siobhan finishes her obligatory AI amatuer tour, which I could care less about, I will be in the front row to see her on her professional real tour.

We'll withhold judgment on Siobhan's potential until we hear her debut album. As far as Adam Lambert goes, the fact that he's been on the cover of our magazine tells you what we think of him as a musician.

Siobhan Magnus "MAY" be no Adam Lambert?? She "DEFINITELY IS NOT" an Adam Lambert ! ! Adam is a real talent who will be a large part of American entertainment for years to come. Siobhan has a strong foothold in.... "the better than average... with an interesting look...and a unique high note"...crowd. Comparing her to Adam is like comparing diamonds to bedazzle.

It s a disgrace, shame on america and simon cowell, she is the only possible superstar, the most talented, the best person and the best voice, i will never watch american idol again..end.
