Adam Lambert talks about his return to American Idol

April 8, 2010   by

American Idol 2009 runner-up Adam Lambert will return to the show next week to serve as a mentor to the nine remaining contestants, the first time a former contestant has been tapped for the role. In addition to serving as mentor on the show’s April 13th episode, he’ll return to Idol to perform his current hit single ‘Whataya Want From Me” the following night. Adam Lambert recently spoke with Beatweek about why he’s chosen to return to Idol:

“I think Idol’s amazing. It’s a phenomenon. As an artist, that’s the reason why I wanted to audition is because of the type of exposure you could get and how you get to challenge yourself every week to try to make a song your own,” Lambert told Beatweek. “When they asked me to be a mentor I thought ‘cool, that sounds great.’ When I watched the past couple of years before auditioning for it, I always had ideas, I always had my own kind of opinions about the contestants.”

As far as his feelings on having participated as a contestant last year: “I owe everything that’s happened thus far to Idol and to the audience that supported me on it.”

Read more from Adam Lambert later this month when he appears on the cover of Beatweek Magazine to discuss his debut album For Your Entertainment, new single “If I Had You,” his upcoming “Remixes” EP, his friendly relationship with fellow contestant Kris Allen, and more about Idol plus his summer U.S. tour plans. Stay tuned to Beatweek.com for more details on our upcoming Adam Lambert issue.

Do any of u guys go 2 MaxLarsenElemetry

You know what I hate? I hate these silly fan wars.

Adam Lambert hasn't had in his bag to deserve as a mentor. He has just graduated last year and even has just start to build his own career. A mentor should be someone whose has proved and success with his long term in career AI needs someone to boost the rating and Adam is the fresh AI graduate who still has lot of fans so why doesn’t use him to beat the DWTS rating. By using Adam as a mentor will also bring Adam's fans to watch AI, Isn’t that simple reason why they use him.

i love adam lembert he`s so cute

Thank you for posting this. I admire adam too for going back to AI stage as mentor since feedback is going to be good or bad. He has gone through that AI machine and hopefully can kick some daring to safe choices contestants.

I saw the American Idols tour last year, and when Adam came onstage, the whole arena went completely ballistic. You could tell he was the one everyone was there to see. When Kris Allen came on, people were already leaving the arena! Adam is definetely a good choice for a mentor.

Melissa, I also saw the AI tour last year, and you are so correct in what you said about Adam! I saw the tour in Pittsburgh, and we were right by the stage. My 13-year old daughter and the others in the arena went completely beserk when Adam came on stage. And for the 3 songs he sang, he put on a performace that noone there forgot in a hurry! Adam is a true entertainer, and as others have said, the other contestants went to him for advice last year. I can't wait to see him on AI again! GO ADAM!!!!

you are gay that is hot love you your biggest fan brandi

Love me some Adam Lambert. :) I'm so excited for this. I'll bet he does a great job with the new contestants. He seems like he's good at working with others and he played Idol like a fiddle last year. Who better to give advice on how to do just that? And I really hope he soars straight from gold and right into platinum territory after this!

There has NEVER been anyone like Adam Lambert on AI - not David Cook or the others. He's the superstar of them all. He's SO talented and gorgeous and genuine.I'm so glad he's a national superstar and an American superstar, as well. Will always support him!!!

Carrie Underwood is busy with her "Play On" Tour!!! She probably could'nt make it!! She will be on "Idol gives Back" !!!

Too bad when someone doesn't think Adam is the greatest they are called haters. Guess what Glamberts.....you're the reason a lot of people don't like him. Your OTT "he's the greatest blablabla is why many don't like him. He is NOT the first to "make the music his own". He is NOT the first to be a glam rocker. He is NOT the only idol that is qualified to mentor. This was purely a stunt by TBTP to get his album to platinum in the states, WHICH THE 'RAWK GOD" STILL HASN'T DONE. Just because he in one of the only idols that has actually been pushed overseas does not make him and "international superstar". Claymates ring a bell?

The likes of Adam Lambert is what AI needs. I am really looking forward to what Adam will offer in next week's shows. I hope that the contestants of this season will really be influenced and helped by Adam through his wise and wonderful pieces of advice. My message to shanba: AI chose Adam, not Kris Allen as you suggested, as the mentor next week based on his talent as a singer and artist, not based on the number of votes that he got during his AI season. What's the use of having garnered the biggest number of votes in the world for a singing competition and then surprisingly won that title (because you received the biggest number of votes, not because you are the most talented singer in your group in the competition) when you yourself knows that you don't deserve the title, right?

This decision isnt about who won the title, who sold more records, or who has had the most successfulcareer after Idol. NO. It is about getting the ONE person who withouta doubt astutely USED the idol platform stage to develop a persona andoutwit the pageantry of the competition. Adam Lambert is a naturalchoice, but a controversial one. He's one of the few (if only)contestants to truly break Idol out of its canned talent-showtrappings. And - love him or hate him - he is truly a performer. Noother past winners have been like him in this regard. So those whoare upset about this decision are not seeing the big picture. This isalso about ratings. I am surprised yet pleased that TPTB haverecognized Adam's contribution to the show, and the fact that he ispolarizing will bring on the viewers who want to see what he will do,just like they did when he was a contestant. It is also a testament, imo, to the fact that Simon Fuller and Co.believe in Adam and want towork hard to make him a star. Adam has a CD and a song to sell, andthis publicity is priceless. It is a win/win situation for everyone. This is no dis to other past idols. I think it would be great to seesome of them come back to mentor as well, if the show were to surviveto next year.

Adam was often mentioned by other contestants last year as someone they went to for advice, so I guess he is a natural mentor. Not like these kids are looking for long term career advice, they are looking for advice about how to pick a song, make it your own and Perform like magic. That is all Adam's domain and it should be really fun to watch. Hope they don't cut all the fun out.

Adam Lambert has been classically trained vocally and on stage. Not only that. He has 18 years of professional experience. He also did AI like no one has ever done AI before, and taught the other contestants how to do the same. He knows how to reinvent himself. He has also crafted and polished himself for public affairs. He is a Master Artist in his own right. And all of the skills he has honed up till now are obviously catapulting him into international mega stardom. That, my friends, is the doing of a brilliant genius. He has a lot to offer. He is the right choice.

Next Week's Theme makes sense why they chose him. Plus he brings in ratings, and has a single and tour to promote. I don't like the theme though. Zeppelin cleared their song for the first time in Idol History last Yr for Adam, they should do it again this Year. Although I guess they prob. don't want this Season's contestants murdering their songs....

Adam carries a good head on his shoulders. He knows who he is, he is human, honest and not always perfect, but he is the sweetest and most talented guy. I feel very fortunate to be able to celebrate this incredible journey with Adam.

Why could they not get Carrie Underwood aleast she is normal.

..and excruciatingly boring

Dirk - You are so right...Underwood was plain boring. Great pipes but lack stage presence. Still just average on stage. Her vocals saves her.

Such a sad comment. Everyone should be as "normal" as Lambert is.

maybe because Underwood (along with a few others) has had her moments "forgetting" to acknowledge AI in thank you speeches when accepting high profile awards. Underwood, and others who have attempted to distance themselves from AI, eventually come back around and graciously recognize AI as a major springboard to their success - but that really doesn't ever erase what took place. I'm just pontificating here...but food for thought.

I agree. Underwood's humongous ego irks me.

You mean in these speeches? ;)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3N3KROTyPIhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDXVcgdXdbghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJfpiD8azMUhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdarMnSuD54http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmFIMag7Sr4...and many more. Perhaps you should do a little research before you spout off false information.

Adam is the perfect choice! Idol is not doing too well in the ratings war, the producers have made a very shrewd and brilliant choice by bringing Adam back to the show. Adam will definitely improve the ratings! I for one can't wait to see him.

OIC. "Relationship" becomes "friendly relationship". OIC OIC

He may be able to teach the idols something, but I think a lot of people will see it as a conflict of interest to have another idol do that who hasn't even been a star for a year yet. Also you'd think they pick someone from longer ago like Kelly, but even that might not be a great idea. So Adam surly isn't the best move for mentor. voted for Adam, but I'd rather see him perform than try to mentor.

For those who doubt this, there are already a lot of negative posts about him being mentor on different boards. But people tend not to be too accepting. They didn't like Miley either.

I have to disagree kfedisamoocher there has been NO OTHER contestant on the show who has PERFORMED like Adam did. Even though Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry, Jennifer and others have had GREAT success AFTER Idol, I don't think ANYONE will argue with me when I say that if you put their weekly Idol performances up against Adam's in a competition there would be NO CONTEST, and NO question of who the better performer is. I too agree that the contestants are indeed fortunate and I'll bet EXCITED to have him mentor them next week. I for one CANNOT WAIT!!

I only said that because I want him to have a positive response from all. I do recognize he's talented and that's why I voted for him. In terms of stage performance they are all different. However Adam may be in the lead for most idols in that respect. But Kelly Clarkson is a standout however in her on way and even though it's been 8 seasons she was great at how she sang and presented her self. In terms of vocals Adam also stands out, but there are still a few idols that are fantastic like he is as well. So there is certainly a "Contest". But the point isn't whether or not Adam is great or not. He is great. The point was about how the Idol audience would feel about him being mentor as a whole. I'm looking forward to his performance on idol. As for mentoring, we'll have to see if that works out. It hopefully will. He needs to be very humble to do it. And his "humble" record isn't perfect after he dissed Boyle this year. But if he stays humble on the show it should work out fine.

kfedisamoocher - You need to get your head out of your azz. I don't know your skill level as a reader and understanding what was said (by Lambert himself) but you obviouslt have "0" understanding and therefore stupid. You need to be clear on your understanding and what you say (write) about someone. FYI as an example...go read more about what was truly said by Lambert in reference to Boyle. If you still feel about what you wrote...then you are plain stupid and loose in the brain.

Review the REAL comment that Adam made on Boyle. He was taken out of context, and I believe that some writers "intentionally" did that in order to get more readers of their articles... and they indeed succeeded!

Ok Harry, I will. Thanks. But the thing is saying her musical take on "wild horses" was a sacrilegious treatment wasn't all that humble or objective. I'm a fan of both Lambert and Boyle, so this did have an effect. But I will try to see if I find anything new on it that explains it more.

Wow Kam, for a "reader" with such a "high skill level" you sound like a bit like a rabid fantard. I did read it, and he did criticize her album. Anyone who thinks that's a bright move is drinking koolaide somewhere. Adam, "I’m happy for her success, but that album is terrible. Wild Horses is the one that made me laugh the hardest. I just died when I heard it, I was crying with laughter. It was the most horrendous, sacrilegious treatment of that song!". He could have said he didn't care for it, but saying he was "crying with laughter" and that it was "horrendous" was over the top. Regardless of whether or not he laughed etc, he was still bugged by it. But if you read my OP, (if you can read as you accused me of not being able to do) I in a nutshell said I hoped he'd do well, but that some idol fans may not approve. Sounds like you need to stop smoking dope. Kam.

That's good, kfedisamoocher. I appreciate your openness on the issue. Take care. :)

DAVID COOK was ten times better than Adam... Adam belongs on Broadway but is not a rock star...the media keeps trying to make him have more substance and staying power, but eventually he will (hopefully) just go away... maybe he and Lady GaGa can ride off together...I will be TUNING OUT next week because I have no desire to see Adam again or ever...

Check out Next Week's theme, and you'll understand why they picked him. He also has a single and tour to promote. Kris Allen got to sing and got to go to Africa. Adam gets to sing and gets to mentor. Adam has been in the Industry for over a Decade. Kelly Clarkson's relationship with Fuller and co. is rocky remember?

What is next week's theme????????

Kris went to Haiti with Idol Gives back, not Africa. He went to Rwanda (Africa) with TOMS Shoes, Bridge2Rwanda and Heifer International.

If Kelly's relationship with Fuller was probably some what rocky and it would have been five years ago when she left his management. But they have since moved on and have respect for each other. If their relationship was still rocky I doubt she would have came back for the first Idol Gives Back, season 6 finale, went to the opening of the AI Experience at Disney and gave him a sincere hug when he gave her her trophy and last year to perform 'My Life Would Suck..." on the show.

I will watch AI next week since Adam Lambert is mentoring and performing. I still will not bother to vote because of the way AT&T helped manipulate voting last year.
