Review: Incipio Feather Case

July 17, 2009   by

When the iPhone first hit the market it quickly became clear that many, if not most, iPhone users wanted to keep their touch screen accessible at all times. Thus the traditional definition of a “case” began to evolve to include products that only cover the back and sides which would have previously been referred to as sleds or shields. As such, Incipio’s Feather is one of the more well-done (and one of the most expensive) products in the quasi-case category.

The Feather is simply a single piece of thin hard plastic that snaps onto the back of the iPhone and extends around its corners and sides. Like most other “sled” cases, the Feather provides scratch protection all around, along with a modest degree of impact protection for all four corners – and of course the opportunity to change your black or white-backed iPhone into any of a number of color choices.

Where the Feather goes further than most is that it actually covers the iPhone’s top surface, providing a pair of cut-outs instead of simply leaving the entire top surface exposed like many competing options do. And perhaps more importantly, the Feather reaches further around the iPhone’s corners than most, thereby increasing the odds that the point of impact during a drop will be protected.

The question, of course, is whether all of this is worth twenty dollars. While it’s the best sled-style case for iPhone we’ve seen yet, and it comes bundled with thin clear screen film, you can find lesser-but-still-solid competing options for half the price. Whether you want to pony up for it is likely a matter of just how drop-prone you are.
