MovieWedge for iPhone and iPod

July 7, 2009

“Wait a minute,” you say to yourself, “isn’t that just a ten dollar beanbag?” Well yeah it is, more or less. iPhone users have been trying to figure out from day one how to prop up their device at a good viewing angle without having to hold it in their hand, and we’ve seen everything from fifty dollar docks that require electricity to tiny plastic stands that are cheap but require a flat surface. Which has still left users the challenge of propping up their iPhone or iPod touch while laying in bed or sitting on the floor an any other random position from which they’ve got the sudden urge to watch a movie or read a web page.

So while the MovieWedge is essentially a just a triangular beanbag with a piece of foam piping sewn into one end to create a shelf for your device to sit upon, it turns out to be the best solution I’ve encountered yet when it comes to propping up your iPhone in those random scenarios. While it certainly hasn’t replaced the electronic charging dock on my desk or the multi-charger in my bedroom, I’ve found that the MovieWedge is ideal for sitting my iPhone on my bed when I’m lying down, or on my knee when I’m sitting down.

I’d like to see additional color choices beyond black, but my only real beef is that the iPhone doesn’t do such a great job standing upright in the MovieWedge as it does sitting sideways (admittedly, most users will want to use it sideways most of the time).

At any more than ten dollars, the MovieWedge would feel overpriced. But as it is, with the exception of those who are handy with a needle and thread and want to roll their own, the price seems reasonable for the rest of us.
