The battery update under warranty is for batteries that don’t charge above 50% I believe, and I don’t know if I fall in that category or not. When I run the ‘Battery Log’ app is shows that I am fully charged 100% it’s just when I use it the battery life goes pretty much straight down, maybe 1-2 hours of call time and 1 hour of watching a movie or so.

I’ll probably just update, sell the old one on ebay and keep moving forward. My bigger concern about buying in January is that I’ll get pushed into an even longer wait for iPhone 4.0 in 2010, making it clash more than likely with the projected end of the ATT contract.

Great – so I could have used the $200 extra I have to pay for the 3G S for a better SMS plan. Now I’m just handing them over to AT&T for nothing. It really would have been nice to know these things in advance.

Andrew – if you purchased your iPhone 3G less than twelve months ago, your battery should be covered under warranty. That would at least solve your immediate problem.

Spoke to ATT and confirmed I’m in the ‘penalty box’ until December. It’s quite a conundrum for me as I have a 3G that is nearing the time for a new battery (it’s dying quickly) and has some cracking on the back cheap as crap plastic case (like many others). Do I pay extra to get a new phone, or get the battery replaced and buy in December. And then what do I do next year, only 6 months into a subsidized phone and nearing the time when ATT exclusivity phases out? Also found out (in the fine print) that the $99 a month means $99 PER LINE if you have a family plan, so while I spend more than $100 a month I don’t spend > $99 per phone.

I’ll probably just grumble a bunch and then buy a new phone. C’est la vie.

I think you misread the release. It’s not for anyone who bought before September of 2008, it is anyone who was ‘eligible for an upgrade before September’ of 2009 is now eligible. As someone who bought on day one in July, but was not eligible for an upgrade until December (i.e. the standard 18 months) I do not benefit from this change in policy. Some folks who were upgrade eligible in 12 months are ok, but others seem to still be stuck.

Hoping the changes in the computer tomorrow bring me happier news.
