XGear N2 touch

March 2, 2009

Do the words “Carbon Fiber case” make you drool? Do you dream of textures and sturdy protection for your favorite gadget? If so, the Xgear case might just be what you’ve been looking for.

The Xgear Case looked very sturdy from the start. The carbon fiber material seems to have a nice weave to it, making it look reliable, protective, well-designed, and a comfortable feel. When you open the package and take a closer look at it, you may be taken aback by its quirky-looking opening. The opening for the iPod is a gap at the bottom of the case, which makes it look like a big mouth about to swallow your gadget. A doubt crossed my mind – will that case break the minute I try to pry it open to insert the iPod Touch?

Here comes the answer you’ve been looking for: nope. As clumsy as I am, I didn’t break the opening. And frankly, I think it would take a lot to do so. Even though it looks frail, the opening slot offers quite a bit of resistance, due to the carbon fiber material. Better yet, once the iPod Touch is inside the case, it’s a very snug fit. In fact, it became a challenge to try to extract the iPod Touch at the end of the review, which I note as a positive – if you want a case for your iPod, you don’t want it to fall right off. Also worth noting, the included microfiber cloth and protective film ensure your screen is in optimum condition and stays that way (add on before inserting the iPod Touch in the case).

Once the iPod Touch was inside, I played around for a few hours on the usual apps – Bejeweled, Frenzic, Wordle. The case was comfortable in my hand, not too bulky, and I really liked how the buttons on the top and side where fitted. They were protected by the case, but didn’t prevent and easy activation or touch from your fingers. The same sensitivity, with extra protection. My recommendation: if you get this case, put the protective film on top of the screen first, because it’ll be harder to do so after you’ve slipped the case on. The Xgear does offer good material and a good design for the iPod Touch, with minimum bulk added. $39.99
