Microsoft Kin canceled already: whatever it was, it didn’t last long

June 30, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

Whatever the Microsoft Kin was, it didn’t last long. The new phone, which Microsoft sent to market seemingly just days ago, has already been end of life’d as a separate product and instead folded into Microsoft’s Windows 7 phone team, which has been a long-running failure itself. The bizarre part is that the end of the Kin has come even as its initial run of television advertisements introducing the product to the public is still airing. And that’s before one considers the name “Kin” itself which was a beyond bizarre choice when one considers the popularity of Amazon’s Kindle.

When the Kin was first introduced, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber prophetically wrote “Microsoft Announces Kin, Its Next Two Failed Phones” – yet one has to wonder if even he expected it to disappear this quickly.

Hulu iPhone app price tag angers fans, should not have been a surprise

June 30, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

The Hulu Plus app for iPhone is free, but unlike the television content on hulu.com, the content available through Hulu’s app comes with a price tag. This should be a surprise to precisely no one. The original Hulu business model, in which users could watch full length television episodes for free on a website an exchange for sitting through the embedded ads, is failing for the same reason that the traditional network television business model is failing: viewers skip ads. Unlike with a DVR, where viewers can fast forward through the ads, Hulu viewers don’t have such an option. But they do have the ability to mute the ad and go do something in another program on their computer, such as checking their email, in order to kill the fifteen seconds during which Hulu’s ads run. So it’s not a surprise that with Hulu’s ads being ignorable and advertisers not getting their money’s worth, the service is now looking at pay-for models, and decided that the iPhone userbase would be its testbed.

It’s not a bad idea in theory, as iPhone users are the type who are willing to pay $200-300 for the cellphone they want, as opposed to the majority of the population who still chug along on whatever free flip-phone was tossed at them during contract renewal. But Hulu has apparently mistaken taste for chumpiness, as the company thought it could suddenly get iPhone users to pay for a service whose one and only claim to fame was that it was free.

Hulu’s problem is that by offering a crappy television experience through a lame webpage for years and using the “but it’s free!” mantra to build an audience, Hulu ended up attracting the kind of users who won’t pay for anything unless they absolutely have to (and yes, a portion of the iPhone userbase does fit this description). Now that the free model has been proven not to work, Hulu now faces going back to its overly thrifty audience with its hand out, asking for money that it’ll never get from them. Worse, by virtue of gaining a “crap but free” reputation, Hulu will now have significant difficulty marketing its pay-for service to those members of the public who are willing to spend their money but only on quality stuff. If Hulu had charged a bit for its service from the start and had used that revenue to improve its user experience, the company might now be able to sell its product to those who are willing to open their wallets. But once you’re known for being a “crap but free” kind of service, you’re generally stuck with that model for better or worse.

Keep in mind that Hulu is owned by the television networks themselves and was started simply so those networks could have a bigger bargaining chip when it came to negotiating with Apple about television shows in the iTunes Store (its the same reason, in fact, that the major record labels convinced Amazon to launch AmazonMP3, which not coincidentally, is now being held back by its “crap but cheap” reputation). As Hulu has only ever existed as a pawn in a larger tactical strategy, its original business model is no longer working, and its sudden attempts to move to a different strategy are being met with outrage by existing users and indifference among potential new users, one wonders how much longer Hulu will be around one way or the other. On the other hand, the iTunes television model, in which users pay two to three dollars to “own” an episode that they’ll most likely only watch once before discarding, hasn’t exactly been a success either.

So even though it’s killing the television industry financially, driving the highest quality shows off the air, and pushing us further into reality TV hell, most of us will continue to stick with our DVRs until something finally gives. But considering how thoroughly Hulu is being run through the shredder today by iPhone users who have made it clear through their posted App Store comments that they have no intention of ever paying a dime for something as crappy as Hulu, one has to wonder what if anything will save television.

White iPhone 4 less than one month away: is it still worth the wait

June 30, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

Today is the last day of June, which means that the white iPhone 4 will surface within a month unless Apple pushes back launch estimates again. The company’s current “second half of July” statement puts the white iPhone 4 another two to four weeks out. In contrast, the black iPhone 4, which is sporadically available now at Apple retail stores, is listed as being back-ordered by “three weeks” if you order one via apple.com. With the white iPhone now expected to launch around the same time as (or perhaps earlier than) the next batch of black iPhones becomes available online, this brings up the question of just how Apple plans to go about launching the white iPhone.

Will we see another round of pre-orders, this time for the white model instead of the black? Will the white iPhone instead begin at retail, with a pre-announced launch date or will they merely show up at Apple Stores on day in July without warning? And more importantly, among those of you who’ve waited this long for the white iPhone 4, will you continue to wait through whatever fraction of July it ends up being – and how about if Apple delays it again? If you’ve already bought a black iPhone 4, do you expect to face white iPhone envy once they hit the streets? Will you consider attempting to exchange your current black iPhone for a white one, or has that ship already sailed? Or has the white iPhone already lost its luster?

app review: Notsu note taking app for iPhone

June 30, 2010 by Christine Chan · View Comments

The iPhone is the perfect tool for note-taking on the go, and as time passes, there are more and more apps for writing that are available in the App Store. Many of these third party developers are able to create something that is better than Apple’s own Notes app, but at the same time may stray away from the beautiful design that we have become familiar with from Apple’s own apps. Let’s take a look at Notsu, another note app on the iPhone that combines ease of use with a stunningly beautiful UI.

The UI of Notsu is gorgeous and reminiscent of that of a legal pad, although a bit more elegant. The top menu bars are covered in a leathery-like texture that go extremely well with the off-white legal paper. For a brand new app that’s 1.0 (1.0.1 technically, but the 0.0.1 update is for minor bug fixes), it delivers your notes in a very elegant, polished, and almost Apple-like manner.

When the app is first launched, you’ll get a brief splash screen that lasts only for a second, then you’ll get to the main screen of the app, the “Folders” screen. Each folder will have a listing of how many notes is in there, shown on the right hand side. The Edit button at the top allows you to delete or drag the folders into an order of your choosing. At the bottom there will be an All Notes section to view everything, and also a Trash folder to view any deleted notes just in case you would like to resurrect something (I also love the crinkled paper background look of the Trash – it adds more oomph to the app overall). If you really don’t need it, then there is an icon with a paper shredder when you view a trashed note that will permanently remove it. The + button in the bottom left will create new folders, and the ‘i’ button will give links to a User’s Guide, website, tell-a-friend, and write a review in iTunes.

When you go into a folder, the first thing you’ll see is half of a list and half of a note. Swipe to the left or the right to see your List (left) and Notes (right of List). So you can either jump to specific notes via the list, or swipe through your assortment of various notes. I’d assume that the former is easier, but if you want to see everything you’ve done, the latter is a good way to do it.

When you’re in a folder, tapping the + will give you two options when creating a new item – a text note or a list. If you make a list, you can tap on the title to edit it rather than have ‘New List’, and then after doing that, start entering the items for your list. All items in the list will have a circle in the margin of the legal pad interface that can be checked off once complete. New items can be added to the list later via the bottom toolbar, along with several other options. When creating a new text note, it’s pretty basic – so far, there aren’t any choices of fonts or sizes, no various formatting options. It’s all done in Marker Felt, like Apple’s own Notes. This is simply a better repackaging of the default Notes app, done by a third party.

At the bottom of items in a folder, there are three buttons: Move to Folder, E-mail, and Trash (to go in the Trash section, not permanently delete). When e-mailing any note or list, the body of the email will be composed of a button to import the note into Notsu (perfect for sharing with someone else that has Notsu installed on their iDevice), then followed by an image of the legal pad paper with the note/list, complete with the date that can be found in the upper left corner from all items in the app.

Notsu also has a feature on their website where notes can be created (without needing to sign up or anything like that) and e-mailed immediately, no need for the app. But these notes can’t be managed on the website, it’s simply an added bonus for users to create notes/lists and share them with others in case they are unable to get to their iDevice at the time. This feature can be found at notsuapp.com.

The only needed changes to bump the rating up are the ability to change fonts and sizes, and a web syncing service or implementation with Google Docs, etc. Currently, there is no way to get access to these notes without an iDevice besides e-mailing it to yourself. But I’m sure that we can find these types of features in a future update.

iPad sleeve review: Waterfield Designs Slip Case

June 30, 2010 by Daynah · View Comments

Simple yet elegant, the WaterField Designs’ iPad Slip Case is a perfect fit for your iPad. But don’t let the simplicity fool you. A lot of thought has went into the making of this slipcase.

The exterior is waterproof, keeping your precious toy away from accidental spills. The interior is lined with a soft ultra suede that not only keeps your iPad safe from any impact, but also cleans your device as you take it in and out of the case. Protecting your iPad is as simple as slipping your device in. Be sure to have the glass side of the iPad face the heavier padded side of the case. To take it out, hold onto the tab at the end and shake.

Due to the fitted size, this slipcase is best used without any other cases on the iPad. Overall, this case takes simplicity and elegance to a whole new level. If you want to wrap your iPad in a little luxury, this may be the sleeve for you.

The Waterfield iPad Slip Case is available for $29 an comes in a variety of colors — black, blue, green, brown, red, and silver. You may purchase it online at SFBags.com

Larry King retiring from CNN later this year

June 29, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

CNN talk show host Larry King says he’s retiring from his nightly “Larry King Live” gig in the fall in order to spend more time with his family. The seventy-six year old has been hosting the show for twenty-five years. According to a statement King released on cnn.com, his impending retirement was his idea and that he’s looking forward to being able to attend “the kids’ little league games.” He plans to continue appearing on CNN via specials and other one-off appearances.

Neither CNN nor Larry King have made any announcement in regards to who will take his place in the fall; several names have been bandied about of late.

King made the announcement via Twitter to his million-plus followers; neither Twitter nor the commercial internet itself existed when he began his CNN show.

Larry King’s full statement on the matter:

Before I start the show tonight, I want to share some personal news with you. 25 years ago, I sat across this table from New York Governor Mario Cuomo for the first broadcast of Larry King Live.

Now, decades later, I talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end Larry King Live, the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games.

I’ll still be a part of the CNN family, hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects.

I’m incredibly proud that we recently made the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest running show with the same host in the same time slot. With this chapter closing I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring, but for now it’s time to hang up my nightly suspenders.

iPhone 4 battery external solution launches from Konnet

June 29, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

iPhone 4 users won’t be able to use their existing form-fitting battery cases and cradles designed for earlier iPhone models, but Konnet is offering a solution in the form of its PowerEZ, a bottom snap-on battery which also doubles as a flip-out stand. The $29.99 PowerEZ offers 100 mAh, which based on our previous hands-on experience with external iPhone batteries should add about an extra fifty percent battery life to your iPhone 4. We’ll be doing hands-on tests of several iPhone 4-compatible battery solutions this month and will report back with our overall findings; in the mean time, Konnet’s PowerEZ is available through the company’s website.

Empty iPhone 4 box sells for $770 on eBay

June 29, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

iPhone 4 is in such high demand that recently purchased units new in the box are selling briskly on eBay – apparently even if the box is empty. As part of what he called a social experiment, Adam Jackson bought a new iPhone 4 for himself and then put the empty retail box up for sale on eBay, and despite being up front about the fact that there was no iPhone included, the empty box still sold for $770. eBay subsequently voided the auction, but it goes to show that people often don’t pay close attention to the details of what it is that they’re buying. Jackson has documented the “social experiment” on his tumblr page. The iPhone 4 empty box sale is somewhat similar to a scenario a decade ago in which someone attempted to sell a digital photo of a then-new clamshell iBook online.

The inaugural episode of GeekBeat.tv, along with subscription options, is right here.

JayBird releases Sportsband SB2 bluetooth wireless headphones

June 29, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

JayBird has announced the Sportsband SB2 bluetooth wireless headphones to take the place of its earlier SB1 lineup. The SB2 features an array of nine color choices ranging from shiny metallic to pastel acrylic, and includes buttons on the outside of the headphones to control the volume and playback features of an iPhone, iPod touch or other bluetooth-compatible music player, along with a mic for phone calls on an iPhone or other bluetooth-compatible cellphone. The Sportsband SB2 relies on the built-in bluetooth of those devices, but can also be used on non-bluetooth devices such as the iPod nano or iPod classic via an optional adapter. The SB2 is available as of today for $99. We’re still waiting to test out the SB2 here at the Beatweek offices, but its predecessor, the SB1, was a Beatweek award-winning product.

Jawbone Icon bluetooth headset for iPhone: hands on First Look

June 28, 2010 by Bill Palmer · View Comments

Jawbone’s new Icon bluetooth headset has arrived on my desk, or at least “The Hero” model has; it’s one of six new metallic candy-coated Icon models which include flavors of black, gold, silver, white, and red. Out of the box it reminds me a bit of a current-generation iPod shuffle, both for its metallic finish and the fact that it’s shaped vaguely the same, with the Icon being smaller of course. While the Icon is a bluetooth headset which can theoretically be used with any bluetooth-compatible cellphones, Jawbone promises a special level of integration with the iPhone (including the new iPhone 4) including an Icon battery meter on the iPhone’s screen as well as the ability to listen to your iPhone’s music and audio via the Icon wirelessly (although obviously only in the one ear)…

Jawbone’s Icon is impressively shiny right out of the box. But in my hands-on tests the main things I’ll be looking for are audio quality, physical comfort, ease and thoroughness of the touted iPhone integration – and I’ll also be looking to make sure that the Icon is as compatible with the new iOS 4 as it is with existing iPhone operating systems. This one will require a fair amount of real world testing, but I’ll report back with a full review as soon as feasible. In the mean time, the company website is right here.

Ozzy Osbourne likens Lady GaGa to early Elton John

June 28, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

Ozzy Osbourne admits he doesn’t “go out and watch new bands” but he’s gotten a glimpse of Lady GaGa to have decided that he likes the “vibe she puts out” when it comes to her performances. In fact Ozzy says that GaGa’s “craziness” and eccentricity remind him of another star from his own generation, saying that her act reminds him of what “Elton John used to do years ago.” In contrast Ozzy’s seen enough of the talent show contestants who paint themselves as “vocal acrobats” in an attempt to rip off Mariah Carey. But Ozzy laments that even as unique as Lady GaGa’s act is, it’s something that “everyone else has started copying.”

It’s just one of several topics Ozzy Osbourne touched on in Beatweek’s cover story interview (most of the others relating to his new album Scream and his 2010 tour plans which include Ozzfest), which you read right here. You can also read the entire Ozzy issue of Beatweek Magazine for free in digital format right here.

LeBron, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami plus nine Heat scrubs?

June 28, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

LeBron James is headed to Miami to join Dwayne Wade’s Heat team, and Chris Bosh will be joining them, so claims respected NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith – and if true, it’ll make for the most interesting roster in modern team sports, for more reason than one. First, the obvious: three of the NBA’s top five superstars all on one team, in a sport in which only five players take the court at a time, would make for an Olympic-like level of dominance whenever all three are on the court together. The second unique angle would be that even with the moves the Heat have already made (essentially forfeiting its first round draft pick, giving away Daequan Cook, etc.), signing LeBron and Bosh while keeping Wade would leave the Heat (which oh by the way, currently has a grand total of two players on its roster) in a salary cap position in which it would have to put the rest of its roster together by offering mostly minimum salaries to already-wealthy veterans who are so desperate to win a championship with the Wade-LeBron-Bosh trifecta that they’d be willing to sign for millions of dollars less than they could get elsewhere.

However, it wouldn’t be the first time in recent history that an NBA team successfully built a veteran roster on the cheap around a small handful of superstars. In fact, the Pat Riley wrote the guidelines for how to do so himself four years ago when he assembled a cast of talented players with something to prove to complement Wade and Shaquille O’Neal – and won an NBA championship in the process. Sure, it only worked for two seasons before it fell apart, but that was because Shaq ran out of gas; Wade, Bosh, and LeBron are all still young enough that the Heat would be looking at a window of at least five seasons in which it would automatically be a contender.

For another team, signing Wade, LeBron, and Bosh with no money left for the other nine roster spots might be too big of a risk; after all, teams typically have eight or nine players in rotation per game, and that’s before you factor in injuries. But for Riley, who has proven that capable of filling in the vacant roster spots with role players who are at a career stage in which they’re more interested in winning championship rings than buying diamond rings, the decision is an easy one to make if he really is staring at the possibility of being able to sign the big three as Stephen A is now claiming. The question then would become whether the Big Three would insist on Riley himself re-taking the reins as coach. Then again, that seemed to work out just fine the last time.

iOS 4: iPhone 3G users angry over slowdowns, lack of advance warning

June 28, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

iOS 4 runs sparklingly on an iPhone 4 and just fine on an iPhone 3GS, according to our in-house tests and various third party findings. However, the story is different for those who have installed Apple’s new mobile operating system on their discontinued iPhone 3G, which has several iPhone 3G users upset over not only the lags and slowdowns they’ve experienced thus far on their iOS4-enabled iPhone 3G, but also the lack of any warning from Apple about what they were in for before they installed it. Some Beatweek readers are even suggesting something more sinister:

“I would say that for the average user the itunes prompt that says “new software available, want to upload doesn’t give you any warnings that this could include many cons that may outweigh the benefits. I’m a bit more aware and went in with my eyes open as I’m going to replace the phone soon so could manage to live with a few problems, but even so was surprised at the mystery lags I’ve encountered that have made this a worse phone on balance, despite bring features I love.” – Adebrophy

“I do like seeing both emails on the same page, that is cool. But not sure it was worth the 2.5 hours it took to install it and not to mention I still have to put all my songs back on. I think Apple should have said “do this if you want” – Milesbradford

“As for iOS4 on 3G hardware. Mine is such a backwards step that I feel it should have come with a warning before the install.” – Greg

“Yeah my iphone was already getting more and more sluggish and this was the knife in the coffin. It takes for ever just to load my sms app. Everything seems to be slower.” – Ggioe

“It’s almost unusable. I’m hoping fixed in 4.0.1. Thinking of downgrading back to 3.” – Mark Peden

“I installed iOS4 on my iPhone 3G and now I am debating if I should try to restore back to the older OS. The problem is that my iPhone 3G seems sluggish now. Some apps that opened very quickly before just sit there unresponsive.”

Beatweek’s own hands-on experiences in running iOS 4 on an iPhone 3G are right here.

97% of iPhone 4 users having problems according to bullsh*t geek survey

June 28, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

Twenty-nine out of every thirty iPhone 4 users are having problems with their new device, according to the most ridiculous survey in the history of consumer technology. Despite the fact that most iPhone 4 users in the real world are reporting no problems at all and many can’t seem to understand what all the supposed antenna fuss is about, a survey at the geeks-only site MobileCrunch shows that 97% of its readers are claiming to have one major problem with their iPhone 4 or another. According to these humorous survey results, one fourth of all iPhone 4 screens have turned yellow, more than one fourth of all iPhone 4 users are having problems with reception because they’re left handed (even though only about ten percent of the population is left handed to begin with), nearly a fourth of all iPhone 4 users can’t get the camera to work, more than ten percent are having problems with the wifi or proximity sensor – and only three percent of iPhone 4 users say that the first four days with their new device have been trouble-free. The survey, whose results are likely to have shifted in one direction or another by the time you visit it, can be found here; we’ve screen captured the current results in case anyone later claims that they never existed:

While the vast majority of the claims in the survey are obviously false, it’s not immediately clear whether MobileCrunch’s own readers are reporting false information in a libelous attempt to make the iPhone 4 look bad, or whether geek outsiders have hijacked the MobileCrunch survey for the purpose of doing the same. But either way, it shows just how desperately, irrelevantly, and laughably out of touch the geeks-only publications have become in relation to mainstream consumers when it comes to technology issues – and that here in 2010 they’ll apparently do anything to try to make non-geek, consumer oriented products look bad.

iPhone 4 million-plus sales: not hurt by trumped up antenna problems

June 28, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

Geeks have failed to mar the launch of yet another Apple product, as the company has announced initial iPhone 4 three-day sales of 1.7 million units despite many if not most of the headlines surrounding the device in the since its launch being centered around an imagined controversy. Geek headline writers have been bombarding the iPhone 4 with misleading headlines about the device after they figured out how to slightly weaken the new iPhone’s reception by placing their fingers in a certain pattern while holding it, leading to mountainous levels of misinformation permeating the populace. However, today’s announcement by Apple makes it clear that mainstream consumers are more apt to dismiss geek-written technology headlines than ever, after a decade or more of one misleading headline having been published about Apple products after another, nearly all having been proven to be wrong in hindsight.

iPhone 4 sales 1.7 million despite no Verizon iPhone, no white iPhone

June 28, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

Apple’s expected Monday morning press release about iPhone 4 sales has arrived, but the numbers are higher than most had expected: the company says it’s sold 1.7 million iPhone 4 units in the product’s first three days, a number which makes it the strongest product launch in Apple’s history and outshines the 600,000 pre-orders that had been placed for the device. It also dwarfs initial iPad sales, which took nearly two months to notch the same level of sales. The impressive initial iPhone 4 sales figures are set to ease concerns over iPhone 4 availability after some had feared (wrongly, in hindsight) that Apple had stopped taking pre-orders because the 600,000 figure had exhausted initial supply. The 1.7 million figure also alleviates any concerns about the delay of the white iPhone 4 eating into initial sales as some have opted to wait another month for the white model to surface, and it continues to poke holes in the theory that iPhone 4 sales would be hampered either by the lack of a Verizon iPhone or by the presence of the competing Android phone. The overwhelmingly strong initial iPhone 4 sales numbers have painted all these concerns as having been of the worry-wart variety, as the iPhone 4 is now officially the hottest product on the planet, by any objective statistical measure. Beatweek’s full hands-on review of the iPhone 4 is right here.

Lady GaGa Beyonce Telephone wins BET award for best video

June 28, 2010 by Beatweek · View Comments

The vocal collaboration between Lady GaGa and Beyonce on the former’s latest album has netted them both an award for the corresponding music video. Telephone, the second single off The Fame Monster, has won a BET award for best video. The clip, which sees the two pop stars sending up a Thelma and Louise-style storyline after GaGa is released from prison, has seen heavy rotation on MTV during the hours in which it still plays music videos. GaGa has since released Alejandro as her next single, while Beyonce has stated plans to take the year off from music. Of the award. GaGa tweeted “Paws up for B! X Mother Monster.”
